Multidecadal Intensification of Atlantic Tropical Instability Waves

نویسندگان

چکیده

Tropical Instability Waves (TIWs) are the dominant source of intraseasonal variability in central equatorial Atlantic and play an important role redistribution heat upper ocean. Here we use multidecadal records sea surface temperature, level anomaly, salinity, near-surface currents constructed from situ satellite observations to reveal a long-term intensification these variables due increase TIW activity. Enhanced barotropic energy conversion increased covariance horizontal current fluctuations, rather than low-frequency changes mean zonal currents, drives intensification. As consequence, boreal summer cooling tropical North waters through eddy temperature advection by 0.03°C month-1 decade-1 during 1993-2021, change 74 ± 53% relative mean. The presented trends strongly modulated interannual variations like 2021 Niño.

Anticorrelated multidecadal variations between surface and subsurface tropical North Atlantic

[1] In this paper for the first time I show that themultidecadal variations of observed tropical North Atlantic (TNA) sea surface temperature (SST) are strongly anticorrelated with those of the observedTNA subsurface ocean temperature, with long-term trends removed. I further show that the anticorrelated change between the TNA surface and subsurface temperature is a distinctive signature of the...

Western tropical Pacific multidecadal variability forced by the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation

Observational analysis suggests that the western tropical Pacific (WTP) sea surface temperature (SST) shows predominant variability over multidecadal time scales, which is unlikely to be explained by the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation. Here we show that this variability is largely explained by the remote Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO). A suite of Atlantic Pacemaker experiments succes...

Multi-year satellite observations of instability waves in the Tropical Atlantic Ocean

Instability waves in the tropical Atlantic Ocean are analysed by microwave satellite-based data spanning from 1998 to 2001. This is the first multi-year observational study of the sea surface temperature (SST) signature of the Tropical Instability Waves (TIW) in the region. SST data were used to show that the waves spectral characteristics vary from yearto-year. They also vary on each latitude ...

Atmospheric response to Atlantic tropical instability waves in Community Atmosphere Model version 3

[1] Tropical instability waves (TIWs) are 20to 40-day waves that appear along the sea surface temperature (SST) front of the equatorial cold tongues. In this study, we investigate the atmospheric planetary boundary layer response to TIW-induced SST variations in the tropical Atlantic Ocean using Community Atmosphere Model version 3 (CAM3) developed at the National Center for Atmospheric Researc...

Temperature Advection by Tropical Instability Waves

A numerical model of the tropical Pacific Ocean is used to investigate the processes that cause the horizontal temperature advection of tropical instability waves (TIWs). It is found that their temperature advection cannot be explained by the processes on which the mixing length paradigm is based. Horizontal mixing of temperature across the equatorial SST front does happen, but it is small rela...
